Paris: Maeght, 1948-1950, first edition, one of 200 impressions (total edition 253), signed by Tristan Tzara and Joan Miro on the justification page. A 20th century masterpiece by Joan Miro. ”The Artist & The Book” 206: ”This book represents a particularly effective collaboration between artist and author. Miro's brilliantly spontaneous and amorphous images, drawn directly on the stone with very few preparatory sketches, have the inventive verve of Tzara's random verses”. D. Porzio, ”Lithography, 200 Years…”, page 233: The lithographs that Miro drew for (Parler Seul) represent one of his most successful undertakings”. Johnson / Stein 127: ”Characterized by flowing spontaneity, Miro's lithographic illustrations in primary colors are perfectly paired with the eclectic verse of Tzara”. (Miro, Joan: 1893-1983). Le Centennaire de l'Imprimerie. Lithograph by Joan MIRO (M.190). Paris: Mourlot, 1953, lithograph in colors; aside from the edition of 75, this is an artist's proof, signed in pencil and inscribed 'EA' by Joan Miro; on Arches wove paper, printed to the edges, the full sheet; 19.75 x 26 in. (505 x 660 mm). Handsomely framed with double mats and plexi, frame with gold leaf; frame size 28.5 x 34.5 in. (72 x 88 cm); in excellent condition. Reference: Mourlot 190. Provenance: Sotheby's NY. This early print in colors, at the time when Miro's graphics were predominantly in blacks, displays an intricacy of the background design and multitude of Miro's surreal figures, which are floating throughout the composition. Highlighted by the red sun and grounded by the black rectangular shape, this constitutes the connection between Earth and the Universe, making this image an all-connecting icon of Life. This print is considered Miro's best litho, although he did create much later some complex images in other media, such as his large carborundum etchings. $49000

(Picasso, Pablo, 1881-1973) Reverdy, Pierre. Le Chant des Morts. Lithographs by Pablo PICASSO. Paris: Teriade, 1948, first Picasso edition, one of 250 exemplars (total edition 270) on velin d'Arches paper, signed in pencil on the justification page by Pablo Picasso and Pierre Reverdy. The complete book with text by Reverdy and 125 original lithographs by Picasso, including 2 for the cover, all printed in red. 134 loose leaves in a handsome custom boards chemise and folding box; all leaves with tissue guards; overall size 17.5 x 13.5 in. (43 x 33 cm). This book is notorious for its extensive foxing and offsetting, and this is the first time in some twenty years that we acquired a copy with no foxing at all; in superb condition. ”Collaboration between Picasso and Teriade began in the days when the young Greek was in charge of the modern section of Christian Zervos's Cahiers d'Art. It continued through 1933-36, when Teriade worked with Albert Skira on Minotaure, another well known art review. When Teriade began his own artistic and literary magazine, Verve, in 1937, he was to devote three entire issues to Picasso, the first of these appearing in April 1948. In spite of these contacts, and continually renewed friendship between the two men, the opportunity of collaborating on an illustrated book occurred only once. On this occasion, Picasso was to create a new type of book illustration. On January 5, 1945 Reverdy finished a series of 43 poems he called 'Le Chant des Morts'. At first, Picasso thought he would illustrate the text in the usual way - that is, with illustrations separated from the text. The artist changed his mind, however, and decided instead to illustrate Reverdy's text page by page, in the manner of the old illuminated manuscripts. Picasso perceived Reverdy's large handwriting, which filled the pages without crowding them, as an arrangement of little black signs which he could complete with large red strokes resembling oriental calligraphy. The manuscript is thus illuminated, which gives a ritual, religious character to the work.” - Cramer 50. Other references: Bloch 524; Mourlot 117; Monod 9676; Rauch 70.
