The frontispiece of the book is a tipped-in original 4-color lithograph by Picasso, ”La Danseuse” (B.767; M.259), signed by the artist in the plate, printed by Mourlot. Bound in red cloth, with a drawing after Henri Matisse on the front cover; with the original acetate dust jacket; book in very close to fine condition, acetate dust jacket with just a few minor tears and chips at edges. ”In the book, Kochno traces the history of ballet... Complete portfolio with two title leaves (one of them a lithographic facsimile of Picasso's manuscript in red), 2 leaves with text in English and French, the justification leaf and 16 lithographic facsimiles (2 in colors) by Daniel Jacomet after drawings by Pablo Picasso created at Antibes in 1946. This impression is from the issue of 50 hors-commerce, numbered ""H.C. 1"" in red crayon (probably publisher's or Picasso's copy), it contains an additional plate with a very beautiful lithograph after Picasso painted by Jacomet in brilliant pochoir colors (of the entire edition, only 45 copies had this extra pochoir). All leaves with deckle edges on 4 sides, printed on Arches, loose in the original portfolio case with ties, overall 20 x 26 in. (50 x 65 cm); in excellent condition; very rare in this deluxe issue.

In addition, there are 6 original prints, one by each artist: Esteban Fekete (”La Poule”, color woodcut, Paschke 349); Ernst Fuchs (”Flora Okuli”, aquatint etching printed in red, Weis 224/IIIa); Rudolf Hausner (”Adams Lebensbaum”, serigraph in 12 colors, Huber no.49/II); Horst Jansen (”Selbst am 1.10.1975”, etching, Frielinghaus 1974-75/127); Karl Rossing (”Toskanische Landschaft”, color linocut, Rucker 310); and Paul Wunderlich (”Kleiner Steindruck”, color lithograph from 8 stones, Riediger no.509c). The book and the separate prints are housed in a plastic protective case; internally as new, the case is broken. Although the edition of this item is very large, complete copies like this one are not common.

Bound in the original full vellum with gilt illustration and lettering on front cover and spine, top edge gilt. Leaves and plates generally clean; binding tight, covers with slight soiling/spotting, the gilt is still very bright; spine slightly toned; ties renewed; still a superb copy of this deluxe edition.

Marseille, 1951, first Raffaelli edition, number 57 from a total edition of 250 copies on wove Arches paper, signed on the justification page by Michel Raffaelli, illustrating Edgar Poe's text (in French) with 16 original b&w lithographs, of which 10 are hors-texte + the suite of 9 supplemental full-page lithographs, as issued. Although not called for, this example also includes an original full-page ink drawing in black and brown, signed by Raffaelli (only the first 20 copies included similar drawings). Circa 90 leaves, loose in publisher's wrappers, chemise and slipcase, both with minor repairs; internally almost as new. Overall size 11.5 x 9.25 in. (29 x 23 cm). Interesting figurative images by this French artist. Documented in Monod 9171.
